Halibut Derby
On another note, a happy client sent in these photos of last season's catch, so we're passing them along to further whet your appetite for a spring, summer, or fall Port Renfrew fishing adventure. Here's what Kent said: "We will treasure the trip for a long time. Thanks for a great time, hope we can hook up again next year."

Whether it's out at Swiftsure Bank or near shore outside Port Renfrew's harbour, there's plenty of salmon and halibut to be had. Vancouver Island fishing can't be beat!
Both halibut fishing and salmon fishing are picking up all over Vancouver Island, and particularly from Sooke to Port Renfrew. Island Outfitters had their annual "Just for the Halibut" derby last weekend and over one hundred halibut up to 197 pounds were caught from Sooke to Victoria. That's a lot of fish and chips!
The Fraser River spring salmon are showing up in bigger numbers in local waters. These are traditionally the first of the early season spring salmon. They are recognizable by their short and wide bodies -- called "stubbies" or "footballs", getting up to 20-25 pounds typically. They can look huge in photos though, because of their width.
