Welcome to the Jolly Rogers fishing report!
We're in between fishing seasons right now, not really winter any more but not quite spring. There's still a few winter chinook salmon biting in Sooke, but the deep water bottom feeders are starting to get a bit fickle. In typical March fashion, as we transition into Spring there's there's now fewer fish biting but they are getting bigger and bigger. There was a 20 pound Spring caught off Sooke Bluffs last week, and several reports of fish in the teens. The non-stop winter action has been replaced by noticeable bite times -- so if you're in the right place at the right time, there's fish to be had. That's fishing!
For halibut, there's reports of "flatties" being caught all over Greater Victoria, with Jordan River being particulary hot.
The Jolly Rogers will be moving to her summer Port Renfrew home on April 1, kicking off the hunt for early halibut on Swiftsure Bank. As winter wanes, our westerly gales will be replaced with calmer seas, and then the chase begins! Before too long, the early Chinooks will be coming through, black-mouthed "footballs" aiming for the spawning grounds well up the Columbia River. Get aboard with JR and get in on the early season action!
Finally, a couple of photos from last year, to get you thinking about good times to come....
